A top employer according to Forbes – but what do employees say?

Best Buy is an American multinational consumer electronics retailer with more than 120 000 employees. In 2019, Best Buy was named on the Forbes list of Best Employers for New Graduates. This was the first time Best Buy appeared on the list, which consists of companies that new members of the workforce like and would recommend.

We thought it could be interesting to see why Best Buy is listed as one of the best employers for new graduates. To analyze this, we took 18 227 employee reviews for Best Buy, posted on Glassdoor, and ran them through Gavagai Explorer. 

Here are 4 things we found interesting

The topic “Commission” has an average grade of 3,30 / 5, which is lower than the average of all topics (3,41). It occurs in 6% of the reviews and it has been talked about constantly over time.

The topic “Favoritism” has an average grade of 2,94 / 5, which is lower than the overall average of 3,41 / 5. The topic often occurs together with “Leadership”. However, “Favoritism” is only mentioned in 4% of the reviews, which is below average. The topic has been talked about constantly during the last years.

The two topics “Managers” and “Leadership” seems to have a negative impact on the grade. Analyzed over time, both topics are talked about less frequently.

Reviewers who mention the topic “Opportunities” seems to give a higher grade than the overall average: 3,64 / 5 compared to 3,41 / 5. This topic is often mentioned together with “Advancement”.

What can we tell from this?

Our quick analysis shows that employees at Best Buy seem to appreciate the opportunities to advance within the company. 

We have already seen that Best Buy is well regarded as an employer. By looking more closely at the topics that drive down satisfaction, it’s very possible that they could maintain that standing for years to come. Although “Favoritism” is not mentioned very often, it has a significant negative impact on the grade. To avoid future conflicts, it is probably good for the company to investigate this topic further. 

Reviewers who talk about the topic “Commission” seem to give a lower grade than the overall average. It appears that Best Buy employees do not work on commission. However, some reviewers mention that the company wants the employees to act as if they do. 

The topics “Managers” and “Leadership” are also associated with a lower grade but these topics were talked about more some years ago, indicating that Best Buy may have found a way to resolve this dissatisfaction.
